my works are contemporary reflections of fragments of experiences, every day items, or solutions to a problem. i reduce these items to basic elements and then, through wood or other enhancements, try to bring out a new approach to that simple item. through this process, i strive to touch the viewer, reach an experience and elicit an emotion.
i use a variety of materials in my work, though typically the foundational framework begins with wood. i use paint, gold leaf or semi-precious stones for enhancements, and incorporate techniques such a carving and turning as the piece evolves. the initial creation is driven by thinking, then nurtured through experimentation, and finally by familiarity of these enhancements. nuances that i see in the piece, as well as study and examination, lead me to explore colors, textures, materials and alteration of the forms. whether the final work is the result of spontaneous composition or whether it evolves over many iterations, the final form remains true to the initial creative imagination.
while there are some thematic consistencies among different items, each item of my work stands alone. although some works may be related through similar composure of materials or design, each piece is unique. if the viewer discerns a theme among different works then the viewer has added an individual and special element to these works, and an elevated level of appreciation.
our art works are contemporary reflections of experiences from the world around us – captured using a wood foundation and then adorned with paints, stone, or other materials to express the nuances of theme or emotion. our craft works take everyday items and elevate the form beyond function to create functional pieces of exquisite beauty.
